Objective : To contribute to lower suicide rate by identifying characteristics of high risk groups by confirming related psychosocial factors focused on medical lethality. Methods : A total of 103 participants that had attempted suicide visited the emergency department of Jeju National University Hospital October 2014-August 2016. Participants were interviewed including sociodemographic, clinical and psychosocial variables using the lethality scale (LS), suicide intent scale (SIS), scale for suicide ideation (SSI), Beck depression index (BDI-II) and Beck hopelessness scale (BHS). Results : Participants in this study have psychosocial characteristics of female preponderance, mean age 40.3±16.8, unmarried condition and had a job. Most of participants engaged in suicide attempts such as drug ingestion or wrist cutting. Depressive disorder was the most common psychiatric illness among participants, and there were no factors that predicted medical lethality in participants’ suicide attempts. Most of the participants in this study did not have a clear understanding of their level of lethality relative to their attempts. Conclusion : Results provide that it is difficult to predict the high-risk group of suicide attempters using medical lethality as a variable.
