A Study on the Aspect of Conflict between the Conservative and Liberal of Indonesian Islam and the Vigilantes’ Group Consciousness Baek, Hye-Jin In 1998 Indonesia experienced its political reformation following the resignation of authoritarian President Suharto, who was in office for 32 years. During the transition period, the nation saw the vigilantes of Islam virtually replace the police and develop into a radical conservative group, suspected of some violent activities against the Western people in the country. Regarding this situation, this paper aims to observe the aspect of the conflict between the conservative and liberal in the religion of Islam and introduce how the militants justified their acts and the role of media in the movement. Next, I criticize the legitimacy of the group consciousness of the right-wing vigilantes in the light of preceding research by insisting on the cultural diversity and equality for international peace.
