Yakut is an ethnicity live in Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Russia.Among various genre of folklore Olonkho, epic literature, takes a central position. The term ‘olonkho’ mean the whole genre of epic works, also can refer to a work of this genre. Voluminous heroic epics are narratives that depict the cosmogony of Yakut culture, life and battles of numerous characters, people, deities and creatures. Until the olonkho started to recorded it circulated in oral tradition. In 2005 UNESCO proclaimed Olonkho a ‘Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’. Olonkho Kyys Debeliye Buhatyyr [The female warrior Debiliye] was recorded in 1940 from olonkho performer Nikolay Burnashev by Dyakonov. This paper aims to explore the development of female warrior image in comparison with other olonkho works with male and female protagonists, who are defenders of the people. Firstly, this paper introduces Yakut culture and olonkho, and explains about the life of the performer Nikolay Burnashev and the recorded text of the Kyys Debeliye. The structure of this work based on the concept of the balance between the Three Worlds presented in olonkho. It depicts the damage of the harmony and the recovery of the balance, where the protagonist Kyys Debiliye play the significant role. The paper explores the development of the female warrior image based on other works with female warrior, and male protagonist Nurgun Bootur, circulated at the same time with Kyys Debeliye, and claims the possibly of interpenetration of motives and features of the characters between the olonkho works in oral tradition.
