The purpose of this study is to uncover the spatial characteristics of Theo van Doesburg’s 1923 composition work of 'Maison d’artiste’. Contrary to common belief, the work is not a mere composition of colour planes but a house in which lifestyle of an artist is reflected. First the house is broken into separate volumes, and planes. The character of each volume and plane is analyzed. Then relation and movement between volumes are studied with David Leatherbarrow’s concept of ‘meander’. Through analysis of every space-creating-element it is discovered that each volume is designed to fulfill its purpose and each plane creates diverse movement and atmosphere. As shown in dynamic transition from public spaces to private spaces and circulation between the two, 'Maison d’artiste’ reflects the lifestyle of an active artist living in the city. The fact that 'Maison d’artiste’ could reflect the lifestyle so effectively demonstrates that colour plane composition is an effective design strategy.
