The Asia Culture Center(ACC) is a large-scale cultural complex built in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City as part of the Asian Culture City Development Project. Dong-gu is loosing its economic and social vitality due to the relocation of major municipality facilities including the city hall and the development of new residential areas in the outskirts of Gwangju. It was expected that ACC would act as a catalyst for urban regeneration in Dong-gu and bring a new vitality to it. This study focused on the social, economic and cultural changes of the surrounding area influenced by ACC and purposed to understand initial aspects of the catalytic effect of large-scale cultural complex. To compare the changes of before and after the opening of the ACC, this study analyzed the changes of social, economy, and cultural indexes such as population, land value, number of building approvals, business, and cultural activities from 2007 to 2017. As a result, the ACC has given positive impacts to surrounding areas in terms of rising land prices, increasing cultural events and changing businesses. Especially this study found that the catalytic effect is maximized by connecting isolated areas due to large scale complexes and providing convenient facilities for pedestrians. Since the scope of this study is limited to the ACC and Gwangju city, the findings of the study should be carefully interpreted or generalized when applied to other cases.
