Shopping mall, which is representative commercial facility, has been built and enlarged recently in Korea. But because of it's hugeness and complexity visitors are used to be lost their way. Not to be lost their way they sometimes need a shopping mall map that provides visual information on spatial structure of it. But study on shopping mall maps which express spatial structure is insufficient. This study will take a look at element of map design, analyze shopping mall maps mainly with color as an element that express differences of data and provide considerations when maps are planned. Provided maps in shopping malls were collected from 8 UECs around Seoul area. And those were scanned to be digitalized and colors in maps were changed to HVC. Then characteristics of colors were analyzed through comparison with hue, value, intensity. As a result, the number of color is decided by categorizing areas or type of shop. Limiting the number of color is needed because using many colors could make lose their discernment although more colors could express more information. And using warm color(YR, R, Y, GY) is helpful to visual attention rather than cold colors. For legibility using different color over 1.5 value and 3 chroma from adjacent color is recommended. Also locating shop brand name on site in a map is easier to read and find destination. And although landmark plays a role to way-finding, it is not marked or written only by text in most maps.
