Aged idle public facilities have recently been neglected, empty, in urban areas, causing social problems. So the central and local governments have tried to remodel such spaces into performing arts practice spaces with the objective of improving local culture and arts and forming cultural communities. However, lack of data concerning changes and improvement in acoustic performance after remodeling is causing lots of difficulty at the stages of design and construction. From this perspective, this study aimed to assess post-remodeling changes of space elements and finished materials and improvement in acoustic performance of the East Warehouse in Cheongju Tobacco Center recently remodeled into a performing arts space. The reverberation time at 500Hz before remodeling was 3.5 seconds, causing acoustic defects due to excessive reverberation. Then, the improvement in absorption power and room constant with the changes of the space elements and finished materials at the stage of remodeling led to a significant decrease in reverberation time after remodeling: 1.13 seconds for the main practice room and 0.21-0.3 second for the remaining three spaces. Therefore, acoustic performance appropriate for multi-purpose space to hold performances, lectures, and diverse events was secured for the main practice room after remodeling: SPL (dB(A)) 76.5 dB(A), SPL at 500Hz 66.7 dB, D50 51.7%, C80 3dB, and RASTI 60.8% (“Good”). The remaining three spaces were also remodeled into performing arts practice spaces appropriate for practicing speech and movements for plays or dances: SPL (dB(A)) 81.6-83.7 dB(A), SPL at 500Hz 69.4-72.1 dB, D50 93.3-97.4%, and RASTI 80-86% (“Excellent”). It was therefore possible to remodel the east warehouse of the Cheongju Tobacco Center, which had been neglected, into a multi-purpose space and performing arts practice space and provide local residents and cultural groups with a cultural space appropriate for performance and practice for diverse genres.
