Hyo (filial piety) originates from prayer for the perpetuity of life and ancestor worship. This study attempted to figure out family relations and filial piety in folk myths, not in Hyo discourse which has been primarily handled in previous studies. In general, oral literature and literature narratives categorized as ‘filial story’ were created to make people fulfill filial piety. They describe a concept of Hyo under political ideology as well as filial piety as universal humanity. In contrast, founding myth which had no intention to exalt this virtue still keeps the form of primitive Hyo with the divinity and completeness of the founder. This paper reviews the horizontal and inter-respect aspects of Hyo prototype by analyzing family relations and filial piety forms in the following myths: Dangun Myth, Myth of King Dongmyeong (Korea); founding and Gesar myth of Mongolia; founding myth of Manchuria, Amaterasu-omikami myth (Japan).
