Joyce Carol Oates bears witness to suffering and violence running through American society and expresses her subjectivity to convey what she sees in her works with a sense of mission. Oates, however, has barely revealed her private life in her writings that emphasize her subjectivity. But newly finding out about the Jewish background of her grandmother, late Blanche Morgenstern, and her family history after the death of her grandmother, Oates wrote a novel, The Gravedigger’s Daughter, based on her grandmother’s true story. This paper explores the survival of Rebecca Schwart, whose story is inspired by Oates’s grandmother, in American society in The Gravedigger’s Daughter. Rebecca has been exposed to a wide variety of violence but striven to survive, on the one hand running away from violence all the time and trying to overcome her tragic childhood and on the other concealing her Jewish background and family tragedy. And I analyze the reasons that Rebecca’s patriarchal father, Jacob, unlike his daughter, fails not only to survive in American society but also to achieve an ‘American Dream.’ Also, I examine limitations and problems of American society that the ‘American Dream’ reveals.
