Abstract is a summary of an academic thesis and is one of the essential components of thesis. It functions as a screening device and contributes to readers’ general understanding about the whole text. Accordingly, in this flood age of information, the significance of abstract is outstandingly strengthened. Nevertheless, previous studies dealing with abstracts have been focusing merely on those of doctors’ theses. Now, seemingly it is time for abstracts in the academic journals to be analyzed since these are different from those of doctors’ theses due to its text size. Thus, this study tried to look into abstracts of “The Journal of Korean Literary Creative Writing(한국문예창작)” in perspective of genre analysis. The reason why genre analysis was introduced are because it is greatly effective not only in discovering inner structures of the genre text itself but also in comparing variations according to academic filed by means of “move” and its subordinate “stage”. Consequently, main moves of abstracts in “The Journal of Korean Literary Creative Writing” were analyzed as “purpose — (subject) — contents — (conclusion) — (self-critique)” In peculiar, “subject move” and “conclusion move” are so unique in that in abstracts of other academic fields, these moves seldom appear as main ones. Text producers’ preferred encoding way, i.e, critique and emphasizing of literature text itself seem to be reflected as this phenomenon. On the contrary, research methods that were uttered as one of the main moves in previous studies could hardly be found in abstracts of “The Journal of Korean Literary Creative Writing”. This can be interpreted that academic tendency of literary creative studies stressing on literature text did not force relatively the text producer to mention his method. The result of this analysis shall be expected to become the first step to examine variations of abstracts in the academic journals of varying fields.
