The third main and southernmost island in the Philippines, Mindanao, has remained in conflict despite the efforts made by the past five presidents of the country to achieve peace and development. With the election of the current president, Benigno Aquino III, renewed hope in achieving lasting peace and sustainable development has been rekindled in the Filipino people. To fully understand this renewed hope, the research aims to understand how the president's leadership and the interplay of leadership styles - Situational, Transformational and Charismatic, work toward achieving lasting peace and development in the conflicted areas of Mindanao. In hind sight, as to be seen in this research, the general development that the Philippines is basking in, may be attributed to the effective use of the three dominant leadership styles of President Aquino: Charismatic, Transformational and Situational leadership. However, for Mindanao to effectively develop, this research concludes that out of the three, the primary leadership style to be employed by the President must be situational leadership and utilize charismatic and transformational leadership as support styles to help sway the people toward the direction of goal achievement, hence achievement of lasting peace and development. As the term of President Aquino comes to a close in 2016, lessons tackled in this research will be useful for the succeeding administration in its quest to end the conflict and achieve lasting peace and sustainable development in Mindanao.
