This essay purports to read Mary Wortley Montagu’s poem “Epistle from Mrs. Yonge to Her Husband” as feminist. Montagu believes that women should be seen as equals to men, and wants to express it in her works, defying the social custom that men were superior to women in many ways. In 18th-century English society, many assumed that the male was associated with strength of body and of mind, while the female was marked as inferior by a combination of poor judgment and weak self-discipline. Mary Astell questioned the social custom that took it for granted that women were encouraged to define themselves as mothers and household managers rather than as active contributors to their family economies. Because of these roles sanctioned by society, women were prohibited from pursuing their participation in such public business as politics, and were satisfied with their roles of housewives. In the poem “Epistle from Mrs. Yonge to Her Husband” Montagu presents her equalitarian point of view that women were equals to men, and opposes the social custom that traditionally prescribed women’s obedience to men. The poem is about a woman on trial for committing adultery. Her husband, William Yonge, who took her to court for her adultery, cheated. The poem examines the double standard of public morality, which condemns female infidelity while condoning male infidelity. Montagu questioned the custom that took for granted the inequality between men and women, because she believed that women had the same desires and needs as men. But this identity of women was denied by society. In short, she believed that men and women should be considered as equals. In conclusion, Montagu opposed the ideas of custom and patriarchy that traditionally prescribed that women should obey men, and thought that women should receive proper education, and participate in public affairs. In the poem Montagu presents her feminist viewpoint that women should be seen as equals to men, insists that women should be allowed to be themselves, and tries to find women’s identity,
