The present paper deconstructs the existing approach to the interpretation of Oe’s literary works. The reinterpretation of Oe’s texts leads to the formation of heterotopia, and the readers associate it with the keyword of “catastrophe.” In this article, I first define the ‘In Late Style’ as the destination of the changed story. I then turn to the analysis of ‘HwaDu (topic)’ by taking a semiotic approach in order to figure out the heterogeneous nature of Oe’s texts. Finally, I regard ‘In Late Style’ as the narrative statements that surpass the limitations imposed on the change of ‘HwaDu (topic),’ and present a comparative analysis of these literary works. Our research has the consequence of presenting a “catastrophe” discussion of Oe’s texts. As an outcome of the present work, I hope to shed light on the aspect of Oe’s texts as a buffering device for catastrophes of our contemporary society.
