This paper analyzes the regional differences of the discourse development method employed in Japanese by comparing the occurrence tendencies of several discourse markers used by the young generation of the Tokyo and Sendai areas. It is revealed that the type and usage of discourse markers are similar in these regions but the frequency of these markers differs between the two regions. In particular, compared with the Tokyo region, the young generation of Sendai tends to use the discourse markers dakara and sorede to obtain/maintain conversational turns and to mark the initiation/addition of explanation, and also tends to exploit the discourse marker un to provide an explanation while self-checking its validity. Furthermore, compared with the Sendai region, the young generation of Tokyo tends to employ the discourse marker hora to indicate that the speaker currently shares information with the hearers at the time of speech. It is left for future research to conduct more in-depth work on regional differences concerning the method for discourse development by broadening the target of inquiry.
