This paper scrutinizes Jonas’ community as a dystopian society from usage of language, through which people’s mind, spirit, and desires in society are controlled. Lowry depicts a society that provides equal opportunity called “Sameness” to all members to pursue a happy life, so that all members could apparently live without any worries, not unlike a Utopian world. However, readers can notice that the members of this society are not happy; rather, they seem dark and inactive. Language is used heavily and seriously to examine members’ unconsciousness and to suppress them from expressing their desires. Therefore, language influences members’ world of the spirit including consciousness/ unconsciousness, and it demonstrates its ability to dominate the whole community throughout the novel. This paper examines Lowry’s doublespeak, a two-way usage of language. Society members are forced to practice ‘the precision of language,’ and consequently, members are well trained by the organized education system from an early age not to use metaphors and incorrect expressions. On the other hand, the author uses special expressions as euphemisms to define the severity of the dystopian society. Nevertheless, Jonas’ search for “Elsewhere” where there are freedom of language, desires, and choices, though Lowry’s ambiguous attitude towards usage of language between individuals and greater society leaves us much to discuss.
