The Temple starts from Herbert’s individual life and expands to the whole universe. God expelled sins from humans and plans to eliminate darkness and sins from the world and to preach gospel to the whole world. This dissertation focuses on such poems as “The British Church”, “Church-Rent and Schismes”, “The Sacrifice”, “Providence” and “The Church-militant”. In these poems, Herbert focuses on God’s global and universal gospelization. The head of the church is Jesus Christ and holy believers are the body of it. Herbert emphasizes that the church, the outpost of global evangelization should be a clean and holy temple to be a true church useful to God’s plan. He contends that God supervising all things in the universe accomplishes his history through the church according to his providence and that the church would continue until the day of the Second Advent of Christ, accomplishing God’s will. By investigating his poems in such categories as “True Church” and “The Global Gospelization,” this dissertation might serve as a signigicant momentum to better understand Herbert’s religious thoughts and poetic achievement.
