Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing human life. Education has to respond to AI-induced changes. This also applies to the teaching of foreign languages, whose ‘character’ and ‘goals’ are elaborated in this article. First, the general curricular requirements for language teaching and the ‘character’ and ‘goals’ postulated in the foreign language subjects are analyzed. Subsequently it will be explored, how and to what extent people can benefit from AI in the realm of foreign languages. AI ​​can’t replace the basic meaning and value of foreign language learning, namely to learn new world views, to broaden one’s understanding of the world and to contribute on this basis to the peaceful and common development of humanity. As a result, in the age of AI, the humanistic pedagogical value of foreign language teaching plays a more significant role, while the pragmatic value of communication can be replaced by AI. Therefore, the character of the foreign language subjects should be defined through the pedagogical-humanistic goals ‘Personality Development’ and ‘Intercultural Understanding’. Accordingly, as many different languages ​​as possible should be offered, whereby a deep understanding of culture should be given more weight than fluency in the foreign language.
