This paper based on an analysis of the Asian International Input-Output Table (1995, 2000, 2010), focuses on analyzing the structural factors in the trade imbalance between China and Japan. Considering the intermediate products structures of the two countries, special attention was paid to the main export goods. In particular, we measured the international technological specialization(ITS) index between China and Japan, which provided a foundation for studying the structure of Japan’s intermediate products dependence on China’s intermediate products. The empirical results showed that Japan depends quite heavily on imported intermediate products from China. Thus, China-Japan trade imbalance is due to the increase in imports of intermediate products greatly. In contrast, however, the level of production technology was observed between the two countries are expanding continuously. The results also showed clearly that Japan is gradually becoming more dependent on China’s intermediate products, such as the part material industries. This implies that the technology gap between China and Japan has gradually narrowed throughout the sample period.
