Various carbonate-coated twigs, so-called “rod-shaped stromatolite (RSS)”, are found from the Lower Cretaceous Jinju Formation in Sacheon, Korea, which formed in a semi-arid lacustrine environment. This study focuses on these carbonate-coated grains to understand their formative mechanisms and paleoenvironmental implications. We collected samples from the Bito Island and Seonjeon-ri sections. These carbonate-coated grains occur as decimeters-thick bedded deposits with convex-up upper boundary and flat lower boundary, or accumulated along certain bedding surfaces. The grains are cylindrical in shape with various lengths and diameters, but most commonly 1 to 5 cm in diameter and a few cm to more than 10 cm in length. These structures are mainly composed of a central arboreal nucleus filled up with sparite and detrital sediment, and outer micritic- to sparitic layers. Under microscope, relicts of plant tissues are found from the nucleus. The surrounding micritic- to sparitic layers consist of three different microstructures including laminated, clotted, and fibrous types. Laminated microstructures comprise undulatory convex-up layers consisting of alternating microsparitic and overlying micritic layers. Clotted microstructures are dominated by tens to hundreds of microns wide micritic peloids with indistinct boundaries. The laminated and clotted microstructures resemble those of micr ... 전체 초록 보기
