Troodontids are a very diverse group of theropod dinosaurs characterized by high tooth counts and specialized arctometatarsal feet. Due to their bird-like body plan, the majority of recent phylogenetic studies suggest they are among the most closely related clades to birds. Most of the troodontids are known from the Cretaceous of Asia and North America, and the temporal record of this clade extends back to the Late Jurassic. In the Nemegt Basin of the southern Gobi Desert of Mongolia, seven troodontid genera have been reported from the Djadochta and Nemegt formations. However, the Baruungoyot Formation, which is stratigraphically intermediate between the other two formations in this region, has not produced any troodontids yet. The lack of troodontids in this formation has been confusing because of its rich dinosaur fauna and the similar temporal range among the three major sedimentary deposits in the Nemegt Basin.
