China’s elder population is rapidly growing. As the demand for elder care in the home and in facilities increases, research on methods and techniques to alleviate the caregiver’s burden and to provide help via smart technology is essential. The purpose of this study is to examine pre-elderly acceptance of smart technology in the home in China, which will ultimately make Aging-in-Place successful. For this purpose, an online survey comprising the Technology Acceptance Model questionnaire was conducted. A total of 303 responses from pre-elderly residents in Beijing, China, were collected from the survey. The results of the data analysis show that perceived usefulness and ease of smart technology are high, and both affect intent to use smart technology positively; the performance risk and financial risk of smart technology affect intent to use smart technology negatively. Results indicate that in order for the pre-elderly to better accept smart technology, perceived performance risk and financial risk must be reduced. Results from this study are expected to provide useful information for applying smart technology to Aging-in-Place in China.
