Objectives: The purpose of this study to offer a basic questionnaire to dental hygiene students, to determine their overall satisfaction with their academic major, with the aim of increasing self-confidence through a positive learning experience, and a sense of pride as a dental hygienist. Methods: Questionnaires were handed out from September to October 2018, 319 students from the department of dental hygiene in the J region. Results: The factors that appeared to increase the major satisfaction choice were happiness with university life, voluntarily selecting dental hygiene as a major, the desire to work in a hospital dental clinic, viewing dental hygiene work as a life-long occupation that allows higher critical thinking, and the view that being a dental hygienist is a specialized job. The explanatory power of the model was approximately 48.4%. Conclusions: The department of dental hygiene, trains students to become professional dental personnel. To increase education efficiency and student dental hygienists’ satisfaction, the curricular contents need to not only reflect the students critical thinking ability, but also their desired professional future.
