This study was conducted in order to investigate the effect of neurocognitive rehabilitation-based dysphagia treatment on stroke patients. From 16th September, 2020 to 31st October, 2020, the patients were provided with 30 minutes of daily neurocognitive rehabilitation treatment daily (30 times in total). Treatment involved training to improve the recognition of the mid-position of the tongue to decrease deviation, as well as passively touching various things with the tongue. The latter activity was designed to stimulate somatosensory, touch and motor sensations of the tongue. Korean Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability (MASA), Speech Mechanism Screening Test (SMST), and Correct Consonants (CC) were used to assess the patient before and after the treatment. After the neurocognitive rehabilitation treatment, K-MASA scores improved from 163 to 179 points. Similar improvements were seen in SMST (from 94 to 99 points) and in CC (from 33 to 43 points). In particular, patient showed improved results in dysraxia, dysarthria, lip seal, tongue movement, tongue strength, tongue coordination, bolus clearance, articulation and in certain consonants (ㅋ, ㅈ, ㅉ, ㅊ, ㄹ). In conclusion, neurocognitive rehabilitation treatment brought functional improvement in the lips and tongues of stroke patients. This resulted in improvement in oral preparation stage and oral stage performances, which finally led to an effective treatment of dysphagia and articulation difficulties.
