A Study on Suffixes Forming Mimetic Words in 19th Century KoreanChanggyu Jo Abstract: This paper aims to examine the suffixes that formed mimic words in the 19th-century Korean language. Five suffixes were selected for the study: ‘-ᄋᆞᆺ/-읏, -ᄋᆞᆯ/-을, -랑/-렁, -ᄌᆞᆨ/-즉, -ᄃᆞᆨ/-득.’ The summary of the study is as follows. First, ‘-ᄋᆞᆺ/-읏’ has the semantic function that adds concreteness by combining it with a root that has motion or state. Second, ‘-ᄋᆞᆯ/-을’ existed from the late 7th century to the early 8th century. This suffix also has the function adding concreteness to the root. Third, ‘-랑/-렁’ combines only with roots ending with ‘ㄹ’, and it is assumed that this was a new suffix in the 19th century. This suffix has the function obtaining a prosody effect while reinforcing the motion of the root. Fourth, ‘-ᄌᆞᆨᆨ/-즉’, which existed from the 15th century, was able to make the root a self-sufficient form. This has the semantic function reinforcing the mobility of the root. Fifth, ‘- ᄃᆞᆨ/-덕’, which was also used from the 15th century, did not achieve independence even if these were combined. Instead, it has the function emphasizing the meaning of the root by expanding it. This study is meaningful in that it contributes to understanding the formation process of mimic words, but there is also a limitation that it has not been able to elaborate on the establishment of roots, the function of suffixes, and the synchronic relationship.
