The number of general radiographic examinations was about 200 million per year in2015, which accounts for 78% of frequency for total diagnostic radiography in Korea. Due to thehigh frequency of general radiography and resulting high collective dose, it is required to managemedical radiation safety and patient dose. Nation-wide surveys on medical radiation exposureshave been conducted in developed countries for optimization of patient dose and radiological safety. The objective of this study was to analyze the national medical radiation exposures by generalradiography. In Korea, several studies have been conducted since 2008. The most recent study wasconducted in 2017. The average entrance surface doses and ranges were 2.45 (0.63~22.72), 2.30(0.46~24.29), 0.33 (0.04~2.20), 1.06 (0.11~5.81), 2.91 (0.22~8.45), and 2.87 (0.29~8.50) mGy forhead AP, head LAT, chest PA, chest LAT, abdomen AP, and pelvis AP examinations, respectively. Forpediatric patients, the radiation doses for abdomen AP were 0.26 (0.04~1.34), 0.68 (0.05~3.34), and1.06 (0.08~4.13) mGy for newborns, 5 and 10 years groups respectively. There was wide variation inradiation dose among hospitals. The radiation doses for abdomen AP and pelvis AP examinations,which give relative high radiation dose to patients, in Korea were about 8% and 13% lower thanradiation doses in other developed countries. The radiation dose for chest PA examination, whichgives relative low radiation dose to patients, was about 0.33 mGy in Korea and was about 0.12 mGyin the US and the UK. The wide variation in radiation dose among hospitals suggests that moreattention must be paid to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure from medical imaging. Periodicnation-wide survey on medical radiation exposure is necessary to optimize patient dose for radiationprotection purpose, which will ultimately contribute to patient dose reduction and radiologicalsafety.
