이 글은 ‘6·10민주항쟁’이라는 명칭이 상징하듯, 6월항쟁을 특정 시점을 축으로 (무)의식적으로 기억·기술하려는 인식 틀을 비판한다. 이는 공간에 대한 시간의 주도권을 전제한 서구 근대성의 논리를 반복해 항쟁을 바라본 결과이자, 그와 같은 시각을 재생산한다. ‘6·10’, ‘6·18’, ‘6·26’과 같은 특정 시점에 긴박된 기존의 항쟁사는 시위의 격렬한 양상이나 투쟁의 헌신성을 전경화 할 뿐, 항쟁을 추동했던 고유한 ‘장소’적 문맥과 서로 다른 로컬(local) 주체들의 다양한 경험과 정서를 이해하고 해석하는 것으로 나아가지 못했다. 또한 6월이라는 특정 시점을 중심으로 주체와 운동과 지역(local)을 평가하게 되면서, 항쟁의 지분을 둘러싼 서울(중앙)과 지역, 지역과 지역, 지역 내 중심과 주변 간 경쟁과 갈등이 발생하기도 했다. 이는 항쟁 이후 한국사회에서 민주주의가 보편적 가치이자 제도로서 확고한 입지를 다지게 되자, 각 지역과 주체가 민주화의 상징적 사건인 6월항쟁을 전유해 ‘민주주의’라는 상징자본(symbolic capital)과 정치적 정당성을 획득하려했기 때문이다. 결국 이와 같은 양상은 6월항쟁을 최종 귀결로 설정하고 그것을 설명하기 위해 이질적인 공간과 주체와 운동을 재맥락화한 결과였다. 이에 본 논문은 ‘공간적 전회(spatial turn)’로의 시선 이동의 필요성을 제기하고, 거꾸로 로컬 주체들의 위치와 입장에서 ‘6월’의 운동을 다시 검토할 것을 주장한다. 그 구체적 사례로 광주지역 투쟁의 주요 동력이었던 전남대학교 학생운동의 맥락에서 6월항쟁의 경험과 기억을 재구성했다.

This paper criticizes the frame of perception (un)consciously imposed on the Democratic Struggle in June to remember or describe the event centering on a certain axis of time, as the name “Democratic Struggle in June” suggests. This frame of perception is born from the repeated application of the logic of western modernity, which assumes the preemption of time over space, in the examination of the uprising, leading to the reproduction of this specific perspective. Existing histories of the people’s democratic struggle tied-up with certain points of time, such as ‘June 10’, June 18’, or ‘June 26,’ only draw a landscape of fierce conflicts or the devotion of democracy fighters. As such, they fail to provide and interpret the unique context of the spatial locality and the emotions and experiences of the diverse local agents involved in the struggles. Moreover, the time-oriented assessment of the agents, activities, and locality of the Democratic Struggle in June led to the competition or conflicts between the center (Seoul) and local, between local regions, and between the center and peripheries, over their shares in the democratic struggle. That is, the agents and localities clashed in the attempt to gain exclusively the symbolic capital and political legitimacy of democracy provided by the involvement in the Democratic Struggle in June, a symbolic event of democracy, as democracy became consolidated as a universal value and institutional system in Korea. Conclusively, these aspects arose from the re-contextualization of heterogeneous spaces, agents, and movements towards the final end which was set as the Democratic Struggle in June. Thus, this research argues for the need to shift the perspective to a ‘spatial turn’ and to revisit the Democratic Struggle in June from the respective viewpoints of its local agents. In this regard, this study revisits and reorganizes the experiences and memories of the students’ movement of Chonnam National University, which comprised the key motive power of the Democratic Struggle in June in the area of Gwangju City.
