Tate Modern attracts not only visitors who are interested in art, but also general public who wish to enjoy the place and architecture. Various characteristics of new design that re-organized the existing place and the old power station play a pivotal role. Six projects were selected in the second phase in the 1994 International Design Competition to transform the existing building into an art museum. World-renowned architects such as David Chipperfield, Rem Koolhaas, Tadao Ando, Renzo Piano, Rafael Moneo were included. The winning project was the Herzog & de Meuron’s proposal. Architects selected in the final stage showed their unique philosophy and methods of design in terms of re-organization of the existing place and building. Main purpose of this study is to compare the finalist projects to explore the different architects’ strategies to understand the possibilities of re-organization of place and architecture. Firstly, the background of Tate Modern and the situation of contemporary art museums were studied. Secondly, the characteristics of the existing place in and around Tate Modern were explained. Thirdly, 4 finalist projects with the architects’ design philosophy (H&dM: Machine for Showing Works of Art, DC: Buildings within a Building, TA: Architectural Fusion, RK: Architecture of Dissociation) were analyzed. Analytical elements are divided into place (urban / surrounding context) and architecture (symbolic form, turbine hall, spatial composition). Finally, the case analysis were compared together to understand the common feature and differences.
