The purpose of this study is to define the role, and establish the components and the assessment indicator of the exterior space in performing arts center. The exterior space has the important roles connecting city and the building, and contributing to the functional, economic, and cultural improvement of the city. Throughout the extensive research, the components of the exterior space in performing arts center are divided into access and movement space, community space, and service area by function. And by its character, it can be analyzed into accessibility, receptivity, availability, and openness. For this study, four major performing arts center with more than 1,000-seat in the center of Seoul was chosen. Based on assessment indicator, they are surveyed and analyzed, and audience satisfaction level and interview were conducted and evaluated. The main results of this study are as follows: first, accessibility is most important consideration due to show time and nighttime performance, therefore, exterior space should be easily accessible from the public transportation and streets in multi-direction having the good way-finding signage system. Second, the exterior space should be receptible to accommodate a large number of audience providing various amenities such as resting spaces, shops, restaurants, etc., for theater-goers and citizen. And third, regardless of the presence or absence of the performance, the exterior space of perfoming arts center need to be opened and to provide various outdoor events to the public. Therefore, the exterior space of performing arts center can be utilized as an open cultural center in the region, contributing to social, cultural, and economical revitalization.
