This paper aims to trace aspects of modernity from Mencius to Machiavelli, exploring notions of kingship and justification for dethroning a tyrant, through the lens of Shakespearean stagecraft. Modernity connotes a political discourse on the correlation between statecraft and humanity. Each philosopher’s approach to the issue seems different, but their goals bear similarities since they sought national security by valuing the wellbeing of the commons rather than that of a ruler. Though they took monarchy for granted, their concern was more for the commons than for their ruler. Thus, the audience observes all those issues in Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s political plays, which gives them an opportunity to examine such political controversies. As we can discuss political issues through mass media now, so could Shakespeare’s contemporaries through public theaters. Therefore, it is mediality, now and then, that enables us to observe and discuss contemporary issues in politics.
