This paper is for historical study on some tree names; ‘노간주나무’(Juniper tree), ‘노린재나무’(Stinkbug tree), ‘담쟁이’(Ivy), and ‘엄나무’(Kalopanax). ‘노간주나무’(Juniper tree) was in the word form of ‘노가나모’ in the 19th century literature and it is assumed that ‘노가(老柯子)’ was redundantly combined with ‘나모’(a tree), even though the word has the meaning of tree in it already. ‘노가’ first appeared in the 16th century and it changed into ‘노가즈’, and then into ‘노가지’ and ‘노가주’. And, then, ‘노가주’ became ‘노간주’. On the other hand, ‘노가나모’ changed into ‘노가지나무’ and ‘노가주나무’. And, then, ‘노가주나무’ became ‘노간주나무’ again. For ‘노린재나무’(Stinkbug tree), the tree name is assumed to be from ‘＊노른나모’. ‘노른’ in the tree name is the combination of ‘노른’, the pre-noun of ‘노르-[黃]’(yellowish color) and ‘[灰]’(ash) that the word means ‘노르스름한 빛깔의 재’(the yellowish ash). The tree was named because it produces ‘黃灰’(yellowish ash), which is used for mordant, when it burns. 담쟁이’(Ivy) was in the word form of ‘담이’ in literature since the 16th century. The word is a kind of meaning overlap because it is the combination of ‘담(-墻)’(fence) and ‘-이’, a suffix. It was formed by combining ‘담’(fence) with ‘-이’, a suffix, meaning plants crawling over ‘담’(fence). And other ‘담쟁이’(Ivy) names like ‘담’. ‘담장이너출’, ‘담장이넝쿨’, and ‘담장이덩굴’ were originally used to refer to the ‘줄기’(stems) of ‘담쟁이’(Ivy) at that time, and now every name refers to the whole ‘담쟁이’(Ivy). Among them, ‘담쟁이넌출’ has disappeared because it lost the meaning competition. ‘엄나무’(Kalopanax) was in the form of ‘엄나모’ in the 15th century literature. ‘엄’ in the tree name means ‘엄니’(a tusk), a big and sharp tooth of mammals. Because the leaves of the ‘엄나무’ are big and sharp enough looking like ‘엄니’(a tusk), the tree name has the word ‘엄’ in it. ‘엄나모’ has changed into ‘엄나무’ and then became ‘음나무’ due to vowel raising.
