In this study, we analysed floor plans of modern North Korean vernacular houses. By means of j-graph method borrowed from space syntax theory, we analysed 79 floor plans collected from various sources. Three dominant patterns emerged: Shallow types, Deep types and Hybrid types. While each type represents specific social embeddings in their configuration, we could notice general traits of North Korean modern vernacular houses as a whole: 1. Co-existence of shallow space and deep space; 2. Lack of open plan; 3. Room-to-room enfilade; 4. Kitchen as an entrance hall; and 5. Kitchen as an independent space. Although our appraoch has its own limit of not covering all plans in North Korea, it could generate a meaningful finding that the modern vernacular houses there has unique characteristics that are very different from their counterparts in South Korea.
