Accurate initial field plays an important role in numerical weather prediction (NWP). Remotely sensed observations such as satellite and radar have been utilized to represent total atmospheric coverage that provide initial conditions to NWP. Radar observations capture three dimensional storm structure with high spatial and temporal resolutions from the ground, while satellite observations cover the gaps in the radar network by providing information about clouds prior to the formation of the precipitation and their environment from the top of the atmosphere. Global Positioning System (GPS) and Radio Occultation (RO) observations can provide valuable information on tropospheric atmospheric water vapor with high vertical resolutions.
