After observational data (Nastrom and Gage 1985) were shown for shallow slope of kinetic energy (KE) spectrum in the mesoscale region, this spectrum have been reproduced by many of atmospheric models. However, it’s dynamics are still debating specially between two different theory for direction of energy cascade - one for the direct cascade of three-dimensional turbulence and the other for the inverse cascade of two-dimensional turbulence. Moreover, the role of another sources (e.g., moisture and topography) are not clearly investigated yet even though they can directly add KE into mesoscale.
