Continuous warming over the tropical Indian Ocean and Western Pacific (IOWP) has shown due to global warming, thus the global influence of the region is expected to rise in the future. However, the influence on West Antarctica has not been clearly determined yet. In recent, West Antarctic ice loss has been accelerated due to basal melting of ice shelves. Changes in circulation is responsible for the melting, allowing the warm deep water from the nearby ocean to flow under the ice shelves.
