The purpose of this study lies in interpreting the works of the artist Hyungsub Shin using the “media archaeology” method, to explore a genealogy of media archaeology and use the findings to promote the development and expansion of media archaeology. Media archaeology is an area in media art that pursues the excavation of past media and the aesthetic use of the media in new ways. Building on recent media archaeological accomplishments, this study points out that existing media archaeology artists mostly restrict themselves to the electronic and electric media in the 20th century, and explores the possibility of sustainable expansion of research on media archaeology by discussing technologies from other periods. As part of the efforts, this study looks into the optical device - "magic lantern" in the 17th century and analyzes contemporary art experiments with this device from the perspective of media archaeology.
