This paper attempts to characterize the early syntactic development in Korean by analyzing longitudinal data of a child who is learning Korean as a first language from the perspective of usage-based theories. According to the usage-based theories, which is closely associated with Construction Grammar (cf. Tomasello 2003), a child is assumed to start out by learning concrete phrases that only gradually become more abstract, as the child recognizes similarities across different concrete phrases, and abstract schemas emerge only in a gradual, piecemeal fashion. In this framework, units of language acquisition are constructions, and the acquisition of constructions with variable slots forms the beginning of abstraction and category formation, and it marks the beginning of grammar. Through the investigation of early syntactic development in Korean, this paper illustrates how the syntactic constructions emerge along the path from simple and concrete to complex and abstract constructions as expected by usage-based theories. The results additionally capture some uniqueness of early syntactic development which reflects typological characteristics of Korean as follows. (1) emerging construction networks systematically driven by the automatization process of the verb ending based schemas, and (2) developmental aspects of argument structure constructions implying the emergence of syntactic templates or recursive thinking.
