Purpose : Temporomandibular joint disorder(TMJD) is often accompanied by symptoms of pain and limitation of the range of motion of the jaw joint. This affects the quality of life and causes hypertrophy or hyperactivity of the muscles around the jaw joint. The purpose of this study was to compare on muscle thickness and muscle tone of masseter and sternocleidomastoid(SCM) muscle, Jaw Range of Motion in subjects with and without temporomandibular disorders. and correlation comparison is performed on the results of TMJD group. Methods : Forty patients were allocated to the experimental group (TMJD group, n1=20) or the control group (non-TMJD group, n2=20). Ultrasonography, myotonometer and digital vernier calipers were used to determine the related changes in the msucle thickness, muscle tone, and maximum opening. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests for comparison between the two groups. And Pearson correlation coefficients were used to compare the correlations in the TMJD group results. Results : In the thickness of the masseter and SCM muscles, there was a significant difference between the two groups in relaxed and clenching (p<.05). There was also a significant difference in the maximum opening comparison between the two groups (p<.05). Among tone result values of masseter muscle, there was a significant difference in frequency (p=.011) and stiffness (p=.011). However, there was no significant difference in decrement (p=.256). In addition, there were significant differences in frequency (p=.009) and stiffness (p=.026) among the results of SCM muscle. However, there was no significant difference in decrement (p=.141). There was a moderate negative correlation between r=-.524 between the maximum opening and the frequency of the masseter muscle. In addition, there was a moderate negative correlation between opening and stiffness with r=-.321. Conclusion : Efforts to reduce and relax muscle thickness and muscle tension are thought to help improve the range of motion when planning exercise programs and treatments for TMJD patients with pain.
