Segmental context, voicing contrast, and stress affect the durational pattern of a word in English. In this paper, we investigate how the three factors contribute to durational pattern and phonetic realization of the target phrases with one consonant and sequence of consonants across word boundary. The target phrases are composed of two consecutive words in which the first word is with or without the word final alveolar stop /t/ and /d/, and the second word has word initial affricates /?/ and /?/ such as “sea change-seat change” and “see joys?seed joys.” The target phrases were collected in three stress placement conditions - neutral condition, the condition of stress on the first word, and the condition of stress on the second word. Speech data for native English speakers and Korean learners of English were collected and measured to evaluate the durational pattern and phonetic realization of the experiment phrases. The study results showed that the voiceless consonant sequence undergoes a greater degree of shortening than the voiced consonant sequence for the two subject groups. The proportion of stop release of the first word final /t/ and /d/ was greater in the condition of stress on the first word than in other stress conditions for native English speakers. However, there was little difference in the proportion of stop release with respect to the stress placement for the Korean subject group. The study results were discussed in relation to the cross-language differences between English and Korean phonological system as well as the implications for teaching L2 English pronunciation.
