This study examines the extent to which Hyeondae Sineo Seogui (her eafter “Seogui”), the first neologism dictionary in Korea, published in 1922, reflects the language of the contemporary media. It also investigates how these neologisms were used, based upon the corpus held by the National Hangeul Museum, analyzing the frequency and usage of title words appearing from the time of the Gapo Gyeongjang (the mid 1890s) up to the publication of Seogui First we looked at the characteristics of high frequency title words, and also of title words which saw large positive or negative changes in fre quency around 1910. This revealed a significant agreement between the terms in Seogui and those used in contemporary media. There were also some words not listed in the standard Korean dictionary KuenSajeon (큰사전, published by the Hangeul society from 1947) which had zero frequency in the corpus. This suggests some alternative method of collection by Seogui, other than by collecting new words from contemporary media as stated in its preface. Next we compared the Seogui definitions of some particular cases with their actual usage. We could generally establish the linkage between Seogui and contemporary media, but the Seogui definitions sometimes differed from the actual usage, and where Seogui included a group of related words their definitions lacked consistency. Our analysis of these unsystematic aspects of selection and definition suggest that Seogui was not compiled entirely according to the methodology mentioned in the preface. Finally we examined the activities of Choi Yeon-taek, the editor of Seogui, comparing and contrasting Seogui with Komun, (顧問, a con temporary Japanese neologism dictionary). We concluded that although some definitions in Seogui were clearly influenced by the corresponding definitions in Komun, there are also many differences, and so a more comprehensive analysis will be needed to fully characterize the relationship between the two. It will also be necessary to distinguish the direct influence of Komun upon Seogui from the indirect influence which reflects the transmission of Japanese culture and vocabulary into Korea.
