The inaugural address of the Defense Minister is a product of the military’s communication culture and is established as a separate genre that is distinguished from other general inaugural address. This paper examines the rhetorical characteristics of the inaugural address of the Korean defense minister by analyzing the elements of persuasion, style, and arrangement of the seven inaugural addresses of the defense minister. The element of persuasion was again divided into two parts: high-frequency vocabulary was reviewed at the vocabulary layer, and persuasive characteristics were examined in the sentence and text layer, focusing on ethos, pathos and logos. According to the analysis, the inaugural address of the defense minister showed two characteristics that are different from other ordinary inaugural address. First, the speaker-oriented aspect is stronger than the listener-oriented aspect, and second, it is performed as a ritual speech rather than a purpose for actual communication.
