This research aims to identify ideological tendencies reflected in the text of articles between Korea and China through critical discourse analysis of newspaper articles related to COVID-19 in Korea and China. Comparing the Korean Yonhap News with the Chinese Xinhua News Agency news text, we analyze the similarities and differences between the two countries' newspaper articles on medical staff and confirmed patients or patients. This paper combines the social actors representation theory of the Systemic Functional Grammar with the conceptual metaphor theory of Cognitive Linguistic to identify the ideological orientation of newspapers through analysis of language expressions in newspaper articles. The frequency of reference and the representation way of medical staff and confirmed patients as social actors in newspaper articles in both Korea and China are very different. In terms of the frequency of social actors mention, Korean newspaper articles focus on the confirmed patients, while Chinese newspaper articles focus on the medical staff. In the manner of social actors representation, the Korean articles emphasize the collectivization of medical staff and the personalization of confirmed patients, while the Chinese articles emphasize the personalization of medical staff and the collectivization of patients. There are significant differences in the frequency and usage of metaphorical expressions related to "war" and the tendency of metaphor mappings in Korean and Chinese newspaper articles. First, compared to Korean newspaper articles, Chinese articles uses the "war" metaphor with high frequency. Second, Korean newspaper articles mainly uses noun metaphorical expressions, while Chinese articles use verb metaphorical expressions as well as nouns. Third, Korean articles are evenly mapped on the process and results of the "war" metaphor, while Chinese articles focus on the mapping of the "war" metaphor. The method of social actors representation and conceptual metaphor shown in the newspaper articles contribute to justifying the quarantine policies of the governments of Korea and China.
