This study aims to examine the meaning of hate feelings that threaten modern society, and to explore the direction of understanding others in literature education to overcome them. Until now, in literary education, the learner's understanding of the other has been based on empathy based on the subject's judgment of the other. However, this can be a problem in that the depth of understanding of the other can vary depending on the degree of familiarity between the subject and the other. This is because the subject's understanding of the other has now become a matter of ethics for the community, not a subjective matter of an individual. Therefore, the direction of understanding others proposed in this study is as follows. First, unconditionally empathize with the pain of others. Second, it is to think about being together. Third, we must be able to practice friendship with others. This means that in order to overcome hate, the understanding of the other in literature education should be expanded from the inner maturity of the subject to the direction of emphasizing the 'community' in which the subject and the other live together.
