Service spaces in houses, such as kitchens, toilets, and utilities, are closely related to human physiological needs and reflect the natural, social, and cultural characteristics of the area as well as the level of facility technology at the time. In this study, 62 HDB apartments and 62 condominium service space cases were collected and analyzed to examine how the Western residential type of apartment has evolved while reflecting the unique regional characteristics of Southeast Asia. Regardless of the level of housing, the service space of Singapore apartments has maintained a closed structure that is not exposed to the outside due to traditionalism and socio-cultural influences over the entire period. On the other hand, it was designed to be advantageous for ventilation in response to high-temperature and high-humidity climatic conditions. Recently, the service space of Singapore apartments has entered a new phase in pursuit of flexibility and openness with the latest facilities such as air conditioning and mechanical ventilation by the global trend of high-rise buildings, development of equipment technology, increase in single-person households, and lifestyle changes. These results are expected to be helpful not only in the prospects of Singapore apartments in the future but also in exploring the direction of other Southeast Asian apartments that are just beginning to be introduced.
