The cultivation and consumption of asparagus have increased worldwide, owing to its bioactive and nutrient compound contents that are beneficial to human health. Asparagus extract has been applied in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, among others. The cultivation techniques, surrounding environmental conditions, and cultivars affect the asparagus spear productivity, sensory property, biochemical composition and content, and bioactivity. However, the effects of different levels of shade on plant growth characteristics as well as phenolic compound content and antioxidant activity of male asparagus cultivars have not been extensively investigated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of shade treatment (30% and 70% shade) on the plant growth characteristics, total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, and 2,2’-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity of male asparagus cultivars (Atticus, Avalim, and Herkolim). Two-month-old asparagus seedlings were cultivated in a rain-shelter house and were treated with different levels of shade.
