This paper provides novel empirical evidence that sheds light on the nature of Korean null clausal complements (NCCs), adopting an experimental perspective. Experiment 1 examines whether Korean NCCs license overt extraction. The results reveal that extraction out of Korean NCCs is impermissible. Experiment 2 investigates the availability and unavailability of sloppy and strict readings with proper names and the long-distance anaphor caki ‘self’ in the antecedent clausal complement. The results demonstrate that sloppy readings for Korean NCCs are mostly rejected with proper names while strict readings for them are highly accepted with the long-distance anaphor caki ‘self’. Taken together, our findings from Experiments 1 and 2 suggest that Korean NCCs are instances of CP ellipsis with LF copying, which has not been proposed in previous literature on the topic.
