The present study investigated the effects of a combined exercise program conducted at a community health center in D-gu, Seoul, on metabolic syndrome risk factors and body composition in middle-aged women. We aimed to collect and analyze data for promoting health and physical activities in middle-aged women, aged 50–65 years, who were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. All study subjects participated in the exercise program 70 minutes daily, twice a week for 12 weeks. The metabolic syndrome risk factors and body composition were measured at the onset and offset of the exercise program. The SPSS 24.0 Statistics Windows Version was used for calculating the mean and standard deviation of each variable. A paired t-test was used to compare the before-and-after difference subject to the combined exercise program, and statistical significance was determined for p< .05 or p< .01. The metabolic syndrome risk factors at 12 weeks after participation in the combined exercise program. The findings of our study are as follows.
Significant differences were found for abdominal circumference (2.72±1.90 cm, t=6.40; p<0.01), diastolic blood pressure (2.80±5.01mmHg, t=2.50, p< .05), blood sugar level (7.60±9.63mg/dL, t=3.53, p< .01), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-5.90±7.96mg/dL, t=-3.31, p< .01), and triglycerides (32.40±31.34mg/dL, t=4.62, p<.01), whereas no significant difference existed for systolic blood pressure (2.95±7.35mm Hg, t=1.79, p> .05). Body composition at 12 weeks after participation in the combined exercise program Significant differences were found for body weight (1.39± .95kg, t=6.55, p< .01), body fat percentage (1.58±1.16%, t=6.10, p< .01), body fat mass (1.62±0.66kg, t=10.92, p< .01), and skeletal muscle mass (- .67± .23kg, t=-12.80, p< .01).
