First of all, I would like to extend my sincere congratulation on the 100th anniversary of modern fisheries science research. During the last century, the fisheries science research in Korea has produced remarkable achievements. As we are well aware of, the fisheries industry plays an essential role in the food production industry. The proportion of marine products as a source of animal protein in human diet has decreased from 50-60% in the 1970s-1980s to 30% in recent years. On the contrary, the fisheries product consumption per capita has increased sharply from 42.2kg in 2001 to 67.8kg in 2019.
However, fisheries were overlooked and not adequately valued throughout our history. During the Japanese colonial period, the domestic fisheries resources were plundered by Japan, who had modern European fishing technologies. After the liberation, fisheries have contributed significantly to the economic growth of Korea, and it is fair to be said that fisheries have established the foundation of such growth. Korea exported fishery products such as agar, laver, and squid, and it is a common knowledge that the dollars earned by our citizens who have staked their lives in the distant water tuna fisheries, have become the priming water to kick start the economy. In the 1980s, the major methods of fisheries greatly changed from fishing to farming in Korea. There were constant investments and efforts made by the private sector. Still, we also have to acknowledge that the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) and National Fisheries University of Busan, the predecessor of the present Pukyong National University, also played an important role. Thanks to the researchers and people in the fisheries industry, including the two institutions, Korea has grown into one of the world’s leading fisheries powerhouses. Since Korea’s fisheries science has been developed in the adversity, the 100th anniversary of modern fisheries science research is very meaningful. We may consider the past 100 years to be the era of achievement, but how would the next 100 years play out?
