Recently minimal invasive surgery (MIS) become popular due to its advantages of early recovery and reduced morbidity. In Korea, there have been many pioneers in the field of MIS. In the field of MIS for HBP, Korean surgeons are playing leading role. In this presidential lecture, I would like to share my experiences as a surgeon in the field of MIS for HBP. As I have started laparoscopic HBP surgery early, I happen to be involved in several consensus meeting.
First consensus meeting for minimally invasive HBP surgery was the consensus for laparoscopic liver surgery. It has been held in Louisville, Kentucky, USA in 2008. Many well-known laparoscopic and open liver surgeons gathered and discussed about laparoscopic liver surgery. This meeting has very important in that laparoscopic liver surgery becomes standard surgery for the first time. Laparoscopic left lateral sectionectomy becomes standard operation.
After this meeting, there has been 2nd consensus meeting held in Morioka, Japan at October, 2014. The 2nd consensus meeting was well organized. The literature has been thoroughly analyzed and expert opinion has been balanced with independent Jury.
