This study aims to analyze the color landscape of Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia in which towns and buildings from the Medieval Period are well preserved and managed, and thus to identify how to create the identity of the city. Towards this end, the study analyzed the relationship between color schemes vis-a-vis the city, buildings and natural environment at various distances (a distant view, a middle distance view, a near view and a boundary view) and levels, and developed the color scheme palette. It is expected that these results can be applied to various color scheme techniques in the design sector. For this, the color scheme characteristics were analyzed based on the color measurement data obtained from photos captured by digital cameras at eight viewing points during the direct exploration of the city. The findings of this study are summarized as follows.
There is a significant difference between the view perceived from the surface of the main road in the city and the view from above the fortress and outside the city. This is because the roof of a building that is less than three stories high is not perceived from the ground surface at the center of the city. However, there is not much difference in the distribution of the three attributes of color (hue, brightness and saturation) in scenes perceived from the near view to the distant view. Roofs unified with red and orange colors exhibit identity and similarity between them. In addition, there is saturation and brightness contrast between the red roof and the wall, brightness contrast between the fortress and the walls of the building, and hue, brightness and saturation contrast in the entire city with sky, sea and forest in the background. Overall, the red roofs have visually striking features. Meanwhile, the unified red roofs and the low-saturation, high-brightness and warm-color walls create reflections and shadows according to the intensity and direction of the ever-changing light, thereby producing a color landscape of abundant similarity. The analysis reveals that the unique identify of the city is clearly established through the continuous maintenance and management of the color landscape from the Medieval Period. In addition, since the ratio of area perceived by the roof and the wall of the building varies depending on the level and direction from the city, and there is also a difference in nature, which serves as their background, the color palette inevitably differs. The color scheme palette for each perception point was inserted into the body from <Table 2>to <Table 5>.
