Purpose
Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a rare but lethal cancer. About 30% of GBC are diagnosed after cholecystectomy due to benign gallbladder disease, and termed incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC). Stage distribution at presentation of iGBC vary among reports. This study aims to compare oncologic outcomes between the emergency operation or intervention and elective operation for iGBC.
Methods
Retrospective review of 106 patients who underwent operation for GBC during January 2005 to December 2019 at the National health insurance service Ilsan hospital was performed. Among them, 40 patients (38%) were diagnosed with incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC), which was defined as GBC confirmed during or after cholecystectomy without suspicions during preoperative evaluations. Patients were divided into two groups according to the timing of the operation: emergency and elective. Emergency group included operation or intervention performed within 24 hours of the hospital admittance without prior scheduled appointment. We compared clinicopathologic characteristics, operative findings and oncologic outcomes between the groups.
